Statement for Tuesday, February 03, 2004
By Russ Walker
Oregonians have spoken! Once again, voters have rejected massive tax increases, sending a message to the Governor and those legislators who supported this package that Oregon doesn't need more taxes… Oregon needs fiscally responsible leaders.
Hopefully this time, those who pushed this package through the system, will listen.
When we began this effort only five months ago, we knew that Oregonians were behind the referendum. We were able to gather a record number of signatures in a record amount of time…but we also knew that this election wouldn't be over until 8 pm tonight.
Throughout the signature-gathering phase, they used legal and intimidation tactics. Unfair rulings were given out by the Secretary of State. But, knowing that these taxes were the wrong thing for Oregon 's economy, tens of thousands of voters signed a petition and we were able to qualify for the ballot.
Thank you to all those who have helped this campaign from day one. The folks up here on the stage with us are only a handful of those who dedicated time, money and energy. Jason and I truly appreciate it.
While we weren't able to match our opponents with the deep pockets of public employee unions, we were able to convince Oregonians based on merit…based on the pure logic that taxes during a recession will only hinder our recovery.
Because of that, and because of you, Oregonians have participated in this process of direct legislation by the people, and the people's will has prevailed.
This election will hopefully mark the end of the insatiable need for money in Salem . The end of massive policies passed without public hearing. The end of government that refuses to become more efficient. And the end of playing political games with our economy, our children, our seniors and future.
Now we can say to those politicians who voted for these taxes – try again. Take a look at efficiencies in government. Think about budgeting based on prioritization and core functions. And do what thousands of Oregonians have had to do – live within your means.
