(Salem, OR) — The Secretary of State's office today certified the referendum to repeal the legislature's tax increases as Ballot Measure 30. Measure 30 will be sent to a vote of the people in a special election set for February 3, 2004.
With a final total of 118,274 signatures, the campaign had well over twice the required 50,420. An 84% accuracy rate (92% signature accuracy along with an automatic 8% statutory reduction for assumed duplications) is well above any petition effort in recent history.
The success of the signature-gathering phase of the campaign sets the stage for the remaining 60 days. Recent polling indicates that momentum is increasing for repeal of these tax increases and the receipt of signatures from all 36 counties demonstrates statewide support for the referendum.
“We could not be happier with the results,” said Russ Walker, Director of Oregon Citizens for a Sound Economy and chief petitioner for the referendum. “The number of signatures speaks volumes about the grassroots support this campaign has received.”
“The accuracy rate is equally as exciting. Despite all of the obstacles our opposition may try to throw at us, Oregonians are working hard to make sure this campaign continues its success,” continued Walker. We would like to extend a tremendous ‘Thank you' to all who signed a petition and volunteered for the campaign.”
The February 3rd vote will present the proposed tax increases to Oregon voters. A “no” vote will prevent the increases from taking effect; a “yes” vote will impose new taxes. House Bill 2152, the tax package being referred, imposes taxes on income earners, seniors, property owners, and both small and large businesses. Ballots will mailed around January 15.
